Frequently Asked Questions

Electrolysis is the only FDA-approved method for 100% permanent hair removal. It involves the insertion of a fine, sterile probe into each individual hair follicle. A minute amount of electrical current is then applied to destroy the follicle's growth center, preventing it from ever producing another hair. The hair is gently removed with tweezers.

Yes, absolutely. Unlike laser treatments, which offer permanent hair reduction, electrolysis is scientifically proven to achieve permanent hair removal. Once a hair follicle has been properly treated, it is terminated, and no further hair can grow from it.

The sensation experienced during electrolysis varies from person to person and depends on the area being treated. Clients often describe it as a quick "heat" or "stinging" sensation, a mild discomfort, or a "zap." Most find it very tolerable, and any discomfort is fleeting. We can discuss options such as topical numbing creams during your consultation to maximize your comfort.

Because hair grows in distinct cycles, and only hairs in the active growth phase can be effectively treated, a series of appointments is necessary. The total number of sessions depends on several factors, including the size of the area, hair density, previous hair removal methods, hormonal factors, and consistency in following the treatment plan. During your initial consultation, we will create a personalized timeline for you.

Electrolysis is safe and effective for virtually any part of the body where unwanted hair appears. Common areas include the face (upper lip, chin, eyebrows, jawline), neck, underarms, bikini line, legs, back, and chest. It is also highly precise for shaping and refining existing hair on eyebrows and beard lines.

Electrolysis has an excellent safety record. Immediately following a treatment session, you may experience temporary redness and slight swelling in the treated area. In rare cases, tiny scabs may form, which are a normal part of the healing process. These reactions are minor and typically subside within a few hours to a few days. At Clear Roots Electrolysis, we adhere to the highest standards of sterilization and hygiene, using only single-use, disposable probes.

The primary difference is permanence and universality. Electrolysis is the only method that is 100% permanent for all hair types and skin tones, including blonde, gray, red, and fine hair that laser cannot treat. Laser treatments often require ongoing maintenance, are less effective on lighter hair, and carry a small risk of stimulating additional hair growth in some cases, particularly on the face.

For the most effective treatment, please allow the hair in the treatment area to grow to about 1/8 to 1/4 inch long (enough to be grabbed by tweezers). Avoid tweezing or waxing for at least several weeks before your appointment. Hydrating well by drinking plenty of water in the days leading up to your session is also very helpful. We ask that facial clients arrive without makeup in the treatment area.

You must not tweeze, wax, or thread hairs in the area being treated with electrolysis, as this can disrupt the follicle and prolong your overall treatment plan. Shaving or trimming is perfectly acceptable between sessions. Just remember to stop shaving a few days before your next appointment so we have enough hair length to work with.
